Some believed kids weren’t reading because there wasn’t anything out there they wanted to read. In 1954, Life Magazine reported that children were not learning to read. Seuss was the creator of the idea of “Beginner Readers” books, inspiring generations of readers for decades. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street was initially rejected by over 20 publishers! Seuss suffered the typical rejection that most authors face. Though it was eventually picked up by Vanguard Press, with help from a connection with an old Dartmouth Classmate, Dr. The book’s Seuss-ian rhythm was inspired by the rocking of a cruise ship during a trip to Europe with his first wife, Helen. That first title, published in 1937, was And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Originally, he worked as an illustrator, and political cartoonist, before publishing his first children’s book. His professional career, under the pen-name of Dr. His stories are known for their quirkiness and whimsy, and the distinct cartoonish style in which he brought his characters to life. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in on March 2 nd, 1904 and went on to become one of the most beloved children’s authors of our time. We also read the book May Feels Sad from the My Feelings series from Scholastic.Every March 2 nd we celebrate Read Across America day, otherwise known as Dr. Word pointers are included so the children can look through their books and find words. These *awesome* I Can Read books from Experience Curriculum focus on a few sight words and coordinate with the monthly theme. Each child decorated their mirror as desired with markers, glue and glitter. We made little mirrors with simple supplies – craft sticks for handles, colored paper, and mirrored card stock. An easy way to explore colors! Make & Play Mirrors Our blue paintings – we used two shades of blue paint. Many of the games can be played independently (I put them out as a center) or with a small group. I love all the shape and color activities dispersed throughout the monthly materials. SeussĪfter creating the collages we personalized them with each child’s photo. We used craft foam cut into shapes, large buttons and feathers. To make the many colored days collages, simply provide a piece of black construction paper or cardstock, glue, and brightly colored collage materials. Seuss (shhh, don’t tell!) but I love this book. It’s a short board book but it captures the children’s attention, describes feelings wonderfully and provides an opportunity to further discuss feelings. My Many Colored Days is a must have book for young children.
